Frequently Asked Questions

Why Start Karate?
The benefits of karate practice are HUGE! Karate can enhance your physical strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, and stamina.  Everything that you do in your life becomes a bit easier because of karate. Karate not only trains your body it trains your mind too! This results in improved self-awareness, discipline, confidence and will power.  Not only will you become more confident that you can defend yourself, but your confidence to tackle all of life’s trials will grow.
What ages can join?
We welcome students from age 5 and up. Classes are grouped by age and level, so everyone trains at the right pace.
Do I need any previous experience?
No! Beginners are always welcome. We have programs for first-time students and for those with prior martial arts experience.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing (like a T-shirt and track pants) is fine to start. If you decide to continue, we’ll help you get a karate uniform (gi).
How do belt gradings work?
Karate uses a coloured belt system to mark progress. Gradings are held a few times per year, and students are invited to grade when ready, based on effort, attendance, and skill development.
Is karate safe?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. Classes are designed to build coordination, discipline, and confidence in a controlled environment. Protective gear is used for sparring when students are ready.
Can parents watch class?
Yes! Parents are welcome to observe classes and support their children’s journey.
Do students compete?
Competition is optional. We offer opportunities for students interested in tournaments, but the focus is always on personal growth, fitness, and fun.
How much does it cost?
Pricing varies by program, please contact us for details.
What style of karate do you teach?
We teach Shotokan Karate, a traditional Japanese style focusing on kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).
