Last weekend, Josh and Evalyn represented our program at the Karate Canada U21 & Senior National Championships, competing among the top athletes in the country.

Josh stepped onto the tatami in both U21 Male Kata and Senior Male Kata, taking on the challenge of performing across two highly competitive divisions. Competing at U21 requires speed, sharpness, and precision, while Senior demands an even greater level of presence, power, and maturity. Josh rose to the occasion, demonstrating growth, composure, and a willingness to test himself against experienced senior athletes.

For Evalyn, this event marked an exciting milestone, her Senior Female Kata debut. Moving into the senior ranks is a significant step in an athlete’s development. Evalyn embraced the moment with courage and professionalism, gaining valuable experience at the highest national level.

Nationals is never just about one performance. It represents months of disciplined training, technical refinement, strength work, and mental preparation. Both athletes carried themselves with focus and integrity throughout the weekend, and the experience gained will be instrumental as we continue building toward future goals.

We are incredibly proud of Josh and Evalyn for their commitment, resilience, and continued pursuit of excellence. This is only the beginning of the next chapter.

Big News!

11/17/2025

After nearly three years of hard work, NCCP workshops, evaluations, and countless evenings and weekends dedicated to coaching education, I’m proud to share that I am now Competition Development Certified! This makes me one of only two karate coaches on PEI with this qualification, and the only female karate coach to hold it.

This journey started back in January 2023, and it’s been a long road of growth, learning, and pushing myself to become a better coach for my athletes. This certification reflects a huge commitment, but also the passion I have for helping athletes reach their highest potential.

Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way, mentors, fellow coaches, and especially my athletes who motivate me every day.

To every female coach and athlete: be so good they can’t ignore you. Be loud. Be heard. Take up space. There is room for you, and your voice matters.

Here’s to continuing to raise the standard for karate on PEI.
What is Competition Development?

Competition Development (Comp Dev) is one of the highest levels of coaching certification in Canada under the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). It is designed for coaches who work with athletes competing at provincial, national, or international levels.

To earn this certification, coaches must complete extensive training in areas such as:
  • Advanced technical and tactical skill development
  • Planning and designing season-long training programs
  • Sport psychology and mental performance
  • Strength and conditioning principles
  • Athlete safety and long-term development
  • Ethical coaching and responsible leadership
  • On-site evaluations and practical coaching assessments
Comp Dev coaches are expected to understand how to prepare athletes for high-level competition, manage long-term development, and provide a safe, structured, and effective training environment.

Achieving this certification typically takes 1–2+ years, depending on the sport — which is why completing it is considered a significant accomplishment.

We’re off to a fantastic start at West Kent Elementary School!

Our first karate classes welcomed a small but mighty group of Little Dragons and Little Ninjas, and the energy in the room was incredible. The kids showed focus, enthusiasm, and plenty of spirit. It’s clear this is the beginning of an exciting journey.

We can’t wait to see how each student grows in confidence, skill, and discipline over the coming weeks.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news. I have been selected as the Assistant Coach for Karate PEI at the upcoming 2027 Canada Games! This will also mark only the second time karate has been included in the Canada Games. The sport made its debut right here on Prince Edward Island in 2023, making 2027 another exciting milestone for karate in Canada.

I’ll be working alongside Head Coach Collin Affleck, and I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. Coaching at this level is an honour, and I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the amazing athletes who will represent PEI on the national stage.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I can’t wait to get started on this journey!
